Updating the look of your kitchen is not overly difficult to do. There are some people who assume to make a huge impact in their kitchen they have to do a massive renovation, but that is not the case at all. Believe it or not, updating the hardware in your kitchen can create a really unique look. The guide below walks you through the process of changing out the hardware on your kitchen cabinets.

Remove the Old Hardware

The first thing you need to do is to remove the old hardware from the cabinets. The quickest way to remove them is to use a drill to remove the screws that are keeping the handles in place.

Choose New Hardware

Go to a hardware store and choose which handles you feel would fit the style you want to create in your kitchen the best. The handles you choose do not have to be the same size or have the same layout as the handles you had on your cabinets originally. Any holes in the cabinets can be repaired so that no one can tell they were ever there.

Repair the Holes in the Cabinets

If you chose handles that have a different layout than the handles you had on the cabinets, you need to fill the holes. When you are at the hardware store purchase wood filler that is the same color as your cabinets and a small jar of polyurethane gel. Use a putty knife to carefully dab the filler over the hole and then press it into the hole to fill it. Allow the filler to sit until it hardens. The label will tell you how long it should take. Once it has hardened, you can then paint a little bit of the polyurethane gel over it to create a seamless look on the cabinets.

Add the New Hardware

Once the gel is dry, you can then start attaching your new hardware. A trick to ensure that you drill the holes into the doors at the exact places you need them to be is to measure how far from the bottom you want the handles to be and then color the small areas around the holes where the screws go into the handle with washable marker. You can then use the ruler to determine how high the handle should be and you can press the handle against the inside of the cabinet door to make a guide for you to use when drilling the holes. You can then drill holes through the door from the rear of the door and rest assured that they are the perfect width from one another for the handle to be attached properly.

Once the new handles are attached, your kitchen will have a new look to it. You can then add a unique backsplash with chalkboard paint to create an even more updated look in your kitchen if you want.
